Case Study 1

Nadia Musiuk

A New Beginning After Liver Failure

A Ukrainian expatriate in Dubai, 38-year-old Nadia Musiuk’s life took a drastic turn when she was diagnosed with autoimmune hepatitis.

At first, Nadia chalked up her fatigue and discomfort to a busy lifestyle. But as her condition worsened, she faced the devastating reality of liver failure. Admitted to King’s College Hospital Dubai in October, Nadia met Dr. Parthi Srinivasan, a liver transplant and HPB surgeon from King’s College Hospital London, now leading the transplant program in Dubai.

That meeting changed her life.

Nadia’s diagnosis was swift and precise. Her condition was deteriorating rapidly, and a liver transplant was her only option. At King’s, she found not only expertise but hope. Under the care of Dr. Parthi and Dr. Rakesh Rai, Nadia underwent a successful liver transplant.

But it didn’t stop there. The hospital’s multidisciplinary post-operative care—including hepatologists, gastroenterologists, physiotherapists, and dietitians—played a crucial role in her healing. Nadia now sees Dr. Kaiser regularly, and three months later, she’s back to her active lifestyle, even hiking again.

“I didn’t just get my liver back—I got my life back. King’s gave me that second chance,” Nadia says, her voice full of gratitude.

King’s College Hospital Dubai, building on London’s legacy of 7,000+ transplants, is now aiming to perform 60–70 transplants in the UAE. Nadia’s journey is a powerful example of how that vision is already transforming lives, right here in the Emirates.

Christine & Her Son

A Mother’s Gift, A Son’s Second Chance

It began with a little boy’s yellowing eyes. What followed was a mother’s greatest act of love—and the unwavering support of King’s.

At just 8 years old, her son began to experience troubling symptoms—yellow eyes and skin, nosebleeds, an enlarged stomach. Countless hospital visits brought no clear answers—until a friend recommended King’s College Hospital.

At King’s, doctors quickly diagnosed him with Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis, a rare liver disease. A transplant was the only option. But with no local transplant program at the time, the family had to travel to India during the peak of COVID-19. Christine became her son’s living donor, giving a piece of her liver and, in her words, “the gift of life.”

Now, back in Dubai, they are healthy, thriving—and thankful. With King’s Liver Transplant Centre now established in Dubai Hills, Christine sees a brighter future for others.

“I hope no child will have to travel again for a transplant,” she says. “Having King’s here means families can stay together, heal together.”

This journey, rooted in the legacy of Sheikh Zayed’s vision and King’s world-class heritage, has helped make Dubai a hub of liver transplant excellence. In 2023, the adult center launched. And by 2024, King’s opened the UAE’s first pediatric liver transplant service, ensuring no child needs to go abroad for this life-saving surgery again.

Case Study 3

Manohar Punjabi

From Cancer Diagnosis to a New Lease on Life

At 63, Manohar Punjabi wasn’t expecting his routine checkup to uncover something life-threatening. But what started as fatigue and fever soon became a fight for his life.

Tests revealed dangerously low hemoglobin levels. Further scans showed liver cirrhosis—and then something worse: early-stage liver cancer. Fortunately, Manohar was referred to King’s College Hospital Dubai, where Dr. Karazah, Dr. Shasan, and Dr. Rakesh Rai quickly took over his care.

The King’s team performed a full evaluation. In a meticulous, multi-disciplinary approach, they also discovered advanced heart disease, which was treated with a cardiac stent before his transplant. Timing was critical. Thanks to careful planning and a well-coordinated transplant program, Manohar received a donor liver just a few months later.

“I walked out of surgery pain-free. It was so smooth, I couldn’t believe I had undergone one of the biggest surgeries of my life,” Manohar recalls.

One month post-transplant, his liver is healthy, his cancer is cured, and his diabetes is under control. He’s walking, exercising, and full of gratitude.

“King’s didn’t just treat my disease—they treated me, the person. They saw the whole picture.”

His story reflects King’s unwavering commitment: from early diagnosis and advanced heart-liver coordination to seamless transplant execution and personalized post-op support.
