FAQs
A liver transplant is a surgical procedure where a diseased liver is replaced with a healthy one from a donor. This treatment is typically considered for individuals with end-stage liver disease or acute liver failure.
A kidney transplant is a surgical procedure where a failing kidney is replaced with a healthy kidney from a living or deceased donor. It’s the preferred treatment for end-stage kidney disease, offering better quality of life than long-term dialysis.
Candidates are usually those suffering from severe conditions such as cirrhosis, liver cancer, acute liver failure, chronic kidney disease, or end-stage renal disease. Eligibility is determined through comprehensive medical evaluations by a multidisciplinary team.
Liver: Deceased donor liver transplants and living donor liver transplants. At King’s Transplant Centre, we focus on living donor liver transplants, where a portion of a healthy person’s liver is transplanted into the recipient.
Kidney: Living donor kidney transplants, deceased donor kidney transplants, and pre-emptive transplants (performed before dialysis becomes necessary).
Recovery varies per individual:
Liver transplant: Generally involves a hospital stay of 1–2 weeks, followed by several months of outpatient care and monitoring.
Kidney transplant: Hospital stay is typically 5–7 days, with close monitoring for several months to ensure the new kidney functions properly.
Risks include rejection of the new organ, infections, bleeding, and complications from immunosuppressive medications. However, with advanced medical care, many patients lead healthy, active lives post-transplant.
Living donor transplants often have better outcomes because the organ is healthier and the surgery can be scheduled at the optimal time. For kidney transplants, living donor kidneys typically function longer than deceased donor kidneys.
Yes. People can live healthy lives with just one kidney. Our team thoroughly evaluates all potential donors to ensure their safety, and donors typically return to normal activities within 4–6 weeks.
